Bamboo Woven the Japanese Way

Set on the table before the plates even arrive, a Japanese style rectangular bamboo placemat sets the tone of the meal right away: calm, orderly, rooted in the natural. The bamboo slats come together in a flat weave whose regularity speaks for itself, with no need for superfluous ornament. The golden beige tone of the bamboo goes effortlessly with most tableware and table textiles, light or bold. Solid and steady under warm plates, this bamboo placemat handles daily use while keeping its flatness and its beautiful surface over the years.

Natural Bamboo for Daily Use

Setting this placemat down before each meal becomes a simple gesture that protects your table and limits synthetic materials. The Japanese style rectangular bamboo placemat is cared for with a simple damp cloth, with no special routine, making it a reliable companion for a Tuesday breakfast as well as a careful dinner with friends. The woven bamboo canes absorb small knocks and handle repeated rubbing without warping. Made from a fast growing plant, this bamboo placemat pairs everyday sturdiness with a natural material, two qualities rarely found in a single table accessory.

A Table Setting Inspired by Japan

Laying a Japanese style rectangular bamboo placemat on a plain tablecloth brings the quiet rigor of Asian table arts into your dining room. Woven from carefully selected bamboo strips, each placemat lies flat with a precision that protects your surfaces while framing the plate with restraint. The natural tone of bamboo goes with stoneware as well as white ceramic. Its rectangular shape, true to wabi sabi codes, structures the table without weighing it down and suits everyday meals as well as careful dinners.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the placemat?

It measures 16.9 x 11.8 in (43 x 30 cm), a standard size that holds a dinner plate, cutlery and a glass.

How many should I order?

It is sold by the piece, so order one per guest. Mixing two or three styles in the same tones makes a relaxed, layered table.

Can I put a hot dish on it?

Warm plates are fine. For a pot straight off the stove or out of the oven, add a trivet so the natural fibers are never exposed to high heat.

How do I clean it?

Brush off crumbs, then wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Let it dry flat, away from direct heat. Do not soak it or put it in the dishwasher.
